Matt Damon Opens Up About the Injuries He Sustained While Filming The Odyssey

Matt Damon has revealed that filming Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of The Odyssey was an unexpectedly demanding physical experience, with authentic period costumes leaving the cast bruised, battered and exhausted.

The actor, who plays the legendary Greek hero Odysseus, said the production pushed performers to their limits as Nolan insisted on using historically inspired costumes and practical filmmaking techniques wherever possible.

Nolan's Pursuit of Authenticity Came at a Price

Speaking on the Radio Andy show, Matt Damon shared details about the physically demanding shoot. According to Damon, Christopher Nolan wanted every aspect of the production to feel as authentic as possible, including the costumes worn during battle sequences.

One of the biggest challenges turned out to be the ancient-style leather sandals the actors wore throughout filming. Rather than using modern stunt footwear disguised as period costumes, the production opted for footwear closely modelled on historical designs.

"Many of us are already over fifty, and the biggest thing we came away with was bad backs," Damon joked while reflecting on the demanding shoot.

Battle Scenes Took a Physical Toll

Damon explained that many of the film's action sequences were shot on rough stone surfaces, making every sprint, fall and fight considerably more punishing.

The cast regularly dealt with bruised feet, cuts and scrapes while filming the large-scale battle scenes. However, Damon said the most serious issue wasn't the visible injuries but the constant strain placed on their backs and joints.

During particularly intense weeks of production, some cast members reportedly relied on painkillers simply to keep working through the physically exhausting schedule.

Practical Filmmaking Over Digital Shortcuts

Christopher Nolan has long been known for favouring practical effects over computer-generated imagery whenever possible, and The Odyssey continues that tradition.

According to Damon, the production made very few concessions to modern filmmaking conveniences. Instead, the actors were expected to endure the demanding conditions themselves, from extended combat sequences to long days performing physically challenging scenes on location.

The approach proved especially demanding for a cast made up largely of veteran performers, many of whom are now well into their fifties.

Based on Homer's classic epic, The Odyssey follows King Odysseus as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War, facing mythical creatures, deadly challenges and countless obstacles along the way.

To bring the ancient world to life, Nolan once again relied heavily on large-scale location shooting and IMAX film cameras, aiming to deliver one of the most visually spectacular productions of his career.

If Damon's experience is any indication, the director's commitment to realism demanded not only creative dedication from the cast and crew, but an extraordinary level of physical endurance as well.
