Severance Creators Developing New Sci-Fi Series Shifter

The creative team behind the acclaimed sci-fi hit Severance is developing a new adaptation of a graphic novel set in a future where people can change their appearance—for a price.

The creators of one of the most talked-about science fiction series of recent years are expanding their partnership with streaming platforms. Adam Scott, along with writers Ezra Claytan Daniels and Eli Jorne, has begun work on a new Hulu project: an adaptation of Shifter by Coren Shadmi.

A Future Where Identity Becomes a Commodity

The series is set in the near future, where an illegal technology allows people to instantly transform their appearance. Through a specialized procedure, anyone can completely alter the way they look, giving rise to a thriving underground market of professional "shifters."

These experts can make someone resemble virtually anyone—from celebrities to complete strangers—in a matter of minutes. But the service comes at a cost, as constant physical transformations force clients and shifters alike to question where the mask ends and their true identity begins.

The story follows Rosa, who quickly becomes one of the industry's most sought-after shifters. While her remarkable abilities earn her lucrative assignments, each new transformation brings her closer to losing her own sense of self.

The Writers Behind Severance Lead the Adaptation

The television adaptation is being written by Ezra Claytan Daniels and Eli Jorne, both of whom have extensive experience with high-profile genre productions.

Jorne previously served as showrunner for the first two seasons of The Walking Dead: Dead City and continues to work on Season 3 of Severance as an executive producer.

Meanwhile, Daniels is currently involved in developing a new adaptation of Wes Craven's horror classic The People Under the Stairs for Monkeypaw Productions, founded by Jordan Peele.

Adam Scott Joins as Producer

In addition to his creative involvement, Adam Scott will produce the series through his company, Great Scott Productions. Naomi Scott and Kevin Cotter are also attached as producers.

Development on Shifter began shortly before production was set to start on the third season of Severance. Like its predecessor, the new series explores themes of technological transformation and the impact of technology on human identity.

Hulu has yet to announce a production schedule or reveal the cast, but the combination of the Severance creative team and the graphic novel's intriguing premise has already made Shifter one of the platform's most anticipated upcoming sci-fi series.
