Filming Begins on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Andy Serkis has returned to the role of Sméagol as production officially begins on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the latest film set in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendary Middle-earth.

Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced the start of production on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a new chapter that will expand Tolkien's iconic fantasy universe. Alongside the announcement, the studio released a behind-the-scenes teaser showcasing Andy Serkis returning to one of cinema's most memorable characters.

Andy Serkis Returns as Gollum

Serkis is taking on two major responsibilities, serving as both the film's director and its lead actor. He has once again donned the motion-capture suit to portray Sméagol, the tragic figure whose journey became one of the emotional highlights of Peter Jackson's original The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The behind-the-scenes footage captures Serkis preparing for the role. Moments after calmly reviewing the script, he seamlessly transforms into Gollum, adopting the character's unmistakable posture, movements and mannerisms. The teaser concludes with sweeping shots of New Zealand's dramatic landscapes, signalling the return of Middle-earth to the big screen.

A Story Set Before The Fellowship of the Ring

The film takes place before the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on Gollum's dangerous journey and his connection to the One Ring.

In addition to Sméagol, several familiar faces from Peter Jackson's films are expected to return, including Gandalf, Aragorn and other beloved characters. While plot details remain under wraps, the filmmakers promise to explore events that were only briefly referenced in the original trilogy.

A Long-Awaited Return to Middle-earth

The film is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027, with Warner Bros. targeting the lucrative holiday season for its theatrical debut.

Andy Serkis' return as Gollum is one of the project's biggest highlights. His groundbreaking performance gave the digitally created character remarkable emotional depth, portraying a soul torn between the remnants of his humanity and the corrupting influence of the One Ring.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum marks the franchise's next major chapter following The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films. The filmmakers aim to bring audiences back to Tolkien's world while telling the untold story of one of Middle-earth's most complex and compelling characters.
